Poetry should not be regarded as one more means of escape. Moral responsibility should not be transferred from action to paper in the fate of a particular situation. Poetry… should offer a means of enriching one’s awareness of human experience and… should render greater the possibility of one’s acting, in a future situation, in accordance with the findings of one’s improved intelligence.
