At AWP 2017, the idea that telling a story is a way to reclaim one’s reality kept coming up, and I was reminded of this clip from Toni Morrison. The entire discussion she had with Junot Diaz at the New York Public Library was about an hour and 15 minutes. This clip is just six minutes. A NYC public school teacher in her first year asks which of Morrison’s books she can teach when, for various reasons, many of her books are not approved by the administration. Morrison’s response is stellar.
